This course increased my knowledge and understanding of leadership and team development. The course included a 3-day immersion, which involved information sessions and active participation in cooperative, challenge activities.
---
## Objectives & Competencies
The purpose of the course was to develop the capacity to establish trust, work together with others, and think "out of the box" to solve problems. The experiential activities during the immersion enhanced our critical thinking skills, creativity, problem-solving skills, and ability to work effectively as a team.
**Competencies I developed include:**
- An understanding of team formation and group development, including virtual team development
- An ability to be an effective team member in working with people of diverse backgrounds
- A capacity to communicate effectively, particularly within a virtual environment

## Sources
Notes on and highlights from research and reading material I've been studying on this subject.
#### Books
- [[Rituals Roadmap - Keswin 2021]]
*In this book [[Erica Keswin]], who advocates for putting human connection at the center of business and building deeper relationships between coworkers, highlights how rituals have a positive impact on work culture. She argues that rituals combine [[psychological safety]] and [[purpose]] to improve performance. This is a very practical book with many examples of best-practice rituals, from top companies, for each of the stages in an employee lifecycle, from pre-hire to the last day of work.*
- [[The Five Dysfunctions of a Team - Lencioni 2002]]
*In a very unique leadership book, Lencioni starts by telling a fictional story (or leadership fable) of a new CEO working to unite a dysfunctional team. At the end he presents the [[Five Dysfunctions Model]] that explain why teams often fail and offers suggestions for overcoming those dysfunctions.*
- [[The Culture Code - Coyle 2018]]
*In this book, [[Daniel Coyle]] proposes that there are three actions that a team or organization needs to take to be highly successful - build [[psychological safety|safety]], share [[vulnerability]], and establish [[purpose]].*
#### Articles & Handouts
- [[Begin with Trust - Frei & Morriss 2020]]
*Article in Harvard Business Review in which Frei & Morriss explain how leaders can identify their weaknesses and strengths on three dimensions of [[trust]] and offer advice on how all three can be developed to practice [[empowerment leadership]].*
- [[Dialogic OD A Theory of Practice - Bushe 2013]]
*In this article [[Gervase Bushe]] distinguishes a [[team]] as a group with interdependent tasks and who wins or loses together.*
#### Audio & Videos
- [[How to Turn Groups of Strangers Into Team - Edmondson]]
*A short TED talk in which [[Amy Edmondson]] shares a series of case studies that illustrate the importance of [[teaming]] and how to make it work well.*
> [! note]
> Edmondson's examples of teaming in healthcare made this more relevant to me. I am interested to learn more about the differences in leading a team versus leading a group who is teaming.
- [[How Diversity Makes Teams More Innnovative - Lorenzo]]
*A TED talk in which Rocío Lorenzo argues that diverse organizations are more innovative, and that diversity could be a powerful competitive advantage.*
- [[Daniel Coyle - The Culture Code - Bregman Leadership Podcast]]
*A podcast interview in which Peter Bregman talks with [[Daniel Coyle]] about his book [[The Culture Code - Coyle 2018|The Culture Code]] and the three patterns of behavior that make teams successful.*
- [[3 Steps to Turn Everday Get-Togethers Into Transformative Gatherings - Parker]]
*A TED talk in which [[Priya Parker]] instructs us in how to create more meaningful gatherings by focusing on the human connection. She uses stories of non-traditional gatherings to demonstrate the keys aspects of a specific purpose, an environment of [[psychological safety]] that encourages healthy conflict, and pop-up rules that allow people to connect while maintaining their differences.*
- [[Tuckman's Model - Muzio 2010]]
*A brief video where Ed Muzio explains Tuckman's model of team dynamics and argues that the right kind of conflict can help teams make progress towards the next level.*
