We were introduced to various theories of leadership and explored the self in relationship to individuals, groups and organizations through assessments and reflections. We also started developing a personal leadership philosophy. --- ## Objectives & Competencies A good portion of this class was focused on learning about the variety of [[leadership theories]] that have been defined over the years. We also developed internal skills of perception and insight into the causes of tension and conflict among individuals in a group, as well as understanding group dynamics that are key to finding long-term solutions. One of the objectives of the course was to start to develop our own leadership style, recognizing that there is not one right way to lead, and that different situations and different groups of people require different kinds of leadership. **Competencies I developed include:** - A greater ability for self-reflection - A deeper understanding of [[how individuals in organizations create meaning]] - An ability to use an [[Ignatian approach to transformation]] to reflect on: - [[What I don't want as a leader]]🧩 - [[What I do want as a leader]]🧩 - [[What is required of me as a leader]]🧩 - [[How does this shape who I am becoming]]🧩 - An integrated [[My Leadership Philosophy|philosophy of leadership]]🧩 ## Terms & Concepts - [[banking model]] - [[problem-posing model]] - [[self-embeddedness]] - [[self-transcendence]] - [[resistance to change]] - [[self-as-object]] - [[self-as-subject]] --- ## Sources A list of the research and reading material I've been studying on this subject, along with some of my notes on and highlights. Some sources include a link to my literature note on the material. #### Books - [[The Coaching Habit - MBS 2017]] - [[Heraclitean Fire - Carey 1999]] - [[Pedagogy of the Oppressed - Freire 2000]] [[Paulo Freire]] offers a critique of traditional educational methodologies and proposes a pedagogy with a new relationship between teacher, student, and society. Freire's observations and thoughts can be applied much more broadly than education. His thoughts on a [[banking model]] vs [[problem-posing model]] are just as relevant when looking at management/leadership in the workplace, as well as many other human interactions. - [[The Leadership Challenge - Kouzes & Posner 2017]] - [[Heroic Leadership - Lowney 2003]] - [[Leadership Theory and Practice - Northouse 2019]] - [[The Courage to Teach - Palmer 2017]] - [[Leadership and the New Science - Wheatley 2006]] #### Articles - [[Why Going 'High' When Faced With a Challenge Is So Important To Her - Scipioni 2020]] - [[Facilitative Social Change Leadership Theory - Watt 2009]] - [[Save the Silos - Vanderklipp 2018]] #### Videos - [[The Danger of a Single Story - Adichie 2009]] - [[The Power of Vulnerability - Brown 2010]] - [[Listening to Shame - Brown 2012]] - [[How to Make Hard Choices - Chang 2014]] - [[A Guide to Collaborative Leadership - Davis 2019]] - [[A Guerilla Gardner in South Central LA - Finley 2013]] - [[The Unheard Story of David and Goliath - Gladwell 2013]] - [[Self Interest vs Collective Interest - Zimmer]] - [[5 Ways to Lead in An Era of Constant Change - Hemerling 2016]] - [[The Riddle of Experience vs. Memory - Kahneman 2010]] - [[A Simple Trick to Improve Positive Thinking - Ledgerwood 2013]] - [Strictly Ballroom](https://www.amazon.com/Strictly-Ballroom-Gia-Carides/dp/B0061HZWTU) - [[Steel Sharpens Steel - Malachowski 2020]] - [[Beyond Self Interest - Spears 2010]] - [[Approach to Resistance - Cooper 2010]] - [[Great Thing in an Organization - Palmer 2010]] - [[Causes of Dysfunction - Reyes 2010]] - [[First Theme of Heroic Leadership - Lowney 2011]] - [[Leadership - Aquino 2011]] - - [[How to Overcome Biases - Myers 2014]] - [[Why Good Leaders Make You Feel Safe - Sinek 2014]] - [[The Crisis of Leadership - Tómasdóttir & Freedman 2019]]
