# Designing earrings to symbolize pentimento

![[Finished Project_sm.jpg|200]]I initially had three ideas of how I could create a piece of jewelry inspired by the theme of [[pentimento]] - “seeing and seeing again.” My first thought was to take old pieces of jewelry and other found objects to create something new. My second idea was to design an element and then build a piece with variations on that element. Instead, the vision I chose to pursue was to create a pair of earrings that could adapt and be worn four different ways. This pair of earrings has a foundational element that can be worn alone and is always present. There are two additional elements that can be added separately, each transforming and enhancing the look of the earrings. Much like Torbert’s concept of a [[reframing mind]] (Carey, n.d., pp. 5-7), each new element (frame of reference) adds value but the real advantage lies in reframing and integrating them all.
![[Foundation_sm.jpg|200]]The foundation of this piece is a drop earring with a simply set cabochon. The stone I chose to set is Azurite-malachite, which has an appearance like the Earth. Qualities I associate with the Earth, as a symbol for leadership, are stability, grounding and nurturing. These are characteristics I feel are foundational to my own leadership style.
![[Sun_sm.jpg|200]]The next element that can be added to the drop earring is a dangle pierced with a sun motif . The sun represents energy, vision and shining a light on others; all of which I hope to embody as a leader.
![[Mind Body Heart_sm.jpg|200]]Another element that can be added to the drop earring is a hoop with three hammered paddles. The paddles represent the three paths Palmer (2017) identifies as critical to charting the inner landscape of the self: intellectual, emotional and spiritual (p. 5). They also correspond with the three elements of [[Ignatian pedagogy]]: experience, reflection and action (Carey, 2020).
![[Integration_sm.jpg|200]]This pair of earrings can change and adapt to a variety of looks, from simple to more elegant, depending on the situation. Of course, I think the fully integrated look is especially powerful. Just as a leader is at their best when they can integrate their full self along with the whole versions of the others they are working with.
