I can't count how many thought leaders or inspirational speakers I've heard who agree with Palmer's (2004) assertion that "we all have an [[inner teacher]] whose guidance is more reliable than anything we can get from doctrine, ideology, collective belief system, institution, or leader" (p. 25).
I could never relate to people's description of an intuition like this. I've always struggled to hear my inner voice. I think part of the problem is that I was taking this too literally. What I really appreciate about Palmer's argument, which I don't remember hearing from any of the other thought leaders, is the idea that we all need other people to help us recognize our inner teacher's voice.
What I can relate to is having a trusted group of family and friends who challenge and encourage me while holding space for me to figure things out in my own time - informal [[circle of trust|circles of trust]]. I think the reason I've struggled to hear my inner voice is because I think and process things better in conversation with others than I do on my own. I've never associated the insights I've gained from these kinds of conversations with my inner teacher, because the process has always felt external.
I would like to be more intentional about trying to tap into my inner teacher. I've started reading *Playing Big* by Tara Mohr and she has a guided visualization exercise designed to [meet your inner mentor.](https://www.taramohr.com/book/inner-mentor-signup/) I'd like to see if it could help me feel a stronger connection to my own inner voice.
