# Investigating generative themes requires self-transcendence

[[Paulo Freire]]'s argues that liberating actions on a historical social environment must correspond to [[generative themes]] *and* how those themes are perceived (Pedagogy of the Oppressed, 2000, p. 102).
Freire argues that to investigate a generative theme "requires that the investigators and the people...should act as *co-investigators*" (p. 106). He emphasizes that the more active role the people take in investigating the more they will deepen their critical awareness and take ownership of the situation (p. 106). This sounds a lot like [[self-transcendence]], which Carey describes as the key to full human growth and increasing connection to the [[authentic self]] (p. 7).
