Change is constant; and that applies to our 'self' as well. Our 'self' is not a fixed thing that is the same as it was when we are born. Our 'self' is developed over time through all our experiences and feelings. In fact, we don't have a singular 'self' we have multiple 'selves.' Think about who you are in different arenas of your life. While there are certainly common threads through all of them, I express a different 'self' with my family than I do at work. We also have different 'selves' across time. Who I was 20 years ago is different than who I am today, and I who I am today is different from who I want to be five or ten years from now. Remember Chimamanda Adichie's (2009) warning and beware the danger of a single story.
Palmer (2017) describes truth as "an eternal conversation about things that matter, conducted with passion and disciline" (p. 106). He asserts that truth is not an outcome, but a process of discovery and dialogue. The same applies to our own personal truth. Our 'self' is not a destination that we arrive and stay at, we are in a continuous process of becoming our 'self.' And if we think of authenticity as being true to our 'self,' then authenticity isn't a destination either. It is a process of becoming.
