They have both taught me a lot about what I feel are key components of effective leadership. ## Developing relationships In order to develop strong and healthy relationships, with individuals and organizations, you must first understand them - their needs, [[values]], culture, motivations, communication styles, etc. This is something I learned from watching Captain Picard and his interactions, not only with his crew, but with all of the individuals and groups he made contact with throughout the U.S.S. Enterprise's mission. ## Facilitating a vision and plan Captain Picard also taught me the value of promoting a clear vision, but the vision was never his own; it was a shared vision of what it meant to be part of Starfleet. As a leader, Picard held that vision like a beacon to light the way. And plans were always co-created with his senior officers, and often with input from more junior crew members. ## Encouraging and Empower Individuals Encouraging and empowering his followers is something that Captain Picard excelled at, but I first learned this leadership behavior from my father. My father has always set high standards and expectations for me, but he always paired that with an endless supply of love and support. I was expected to always do my best and strive to be better, and because of his support I had faith in my ability to do just that. ## Curiosity The best quality I have taken from my father is a deep passion for learning. It is the personal value I hold above all others. My earliest memories as a child are of exploring and learning with my dad and the rest of our family. We were always visiting museums, learning about other cultures, and trying new things. He enrolled in community college courses just because he was interested, so I did too.
