%% #💡 #🟠 %% # categorical imperative Central concept in [[Kantian ethics]] that provides way to evaluate motivations for action. *[1]* Three formulations of categorical imperative: 1. [[Universal Law]] 2. Humanity - means vs ends - others have intrinsic value should not be means to an end *[2]* - [[Immanual Kant|Kant]] believed ethical decisions require respect for others, so following religious rules or laws that harm others is not ethical *[2]* 3. Autonomy - As rational beings, we are bound to the [[moral law]] by our own will. *[1]* "Act on that maxim which you will to become a universal law." *[3]* What is right for one is right for all. Test of a moral obligation is that it can be universalized unconditionally. *[3]* What is right ought to be done no matter what the consequences. *([note on p.12](zotero://open-pdf/library/items/F3ZVS4VK?page=12))* *[3]* ## Sources *[1]* - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kantian_ethics *[2]* - [[Introduction Ethical Perspectives - May 2013]] *[3]* - [[Ethical Foundations and Perspectives - Christians 2013]] ## Tags [[moral principles|ethical principle]] --- *Created on:* 2021-11-07 *Last modified on:* 2022-11-05
