Five common adult learning barriers
1. **Squish**
- learning objectives not clearly defined
- hard to determine if participants acquired new skills
- Solution = focus on specific set of skills
2. **No Proof**
- activities that don't tell us if the participant is learning
- Solution = activities that require demonstration
3. **I Sorta Got It**
- participants get stuck on the learning curve
- Solution = training that moves participant along the learning curve until they can demonstrate mastery
4. **The Vortex**
- stressed participants return to instinctive behaviors
- Solution = show participants immediate application; follow-up or practice opportunities
5. **Use It or Lose It**
- knowledge and skills are harder to access the longer they are dormant
- Solution = deliver learning right when people need it
