# communication of expectations
People tend to live up to the expectations others place on them - [[Pygmalion effect]].
High self-expectancies can keep us from lowering our performance when others expect little of us - [[Galatea effect]].
In addition to verbal persuasion, expectations are often communicated indirectly through culture, input, output and feedback.
- The working environment, number and type of assignments, opportunities to speak, and positive feedback from managers can all indicate high or low expectations.
Ethical alternative to deception and ability grouping is communicating high expectations to everyone in the organization - encouraging everyone to function at his or her best.
