# conflict guidelines
Set of strategies to help both sides engage in [[collaborative conflict style|collaborative conflict management]] and generate better outcomes.
- Monitor your personal behavior and behaviors of the other to watch for signs of escalation or avoidance cycles
- Identify common goals and interests
- Develop rules of behavior, for example:
- Take time-outs when discussions get too heated
- Meet in neutral location
- Avoid personal attacks
- Encourage dissent
- Seek consensus rather than vote on solution
- Resist rushed decisions that rob group of productive conflict over ideas
- Focus on mutual gains and find ways to expand the resource pie so everyone can get what they want
- Create a process of productive conflict
