# deception
Knowingly trying to mislead others by keeping secrets, revealing only partial truths, or outright lying.
Lying can be done for personal benefit or to relieve tension between various roles a person plays.
- e.g. person who has taken on two jobs and is stretched too thin may lie and falsely claim an external factor is holding up progress on one project
While lying and deception are generally unethical, there are some exceptions:
- when there is significant threat to life and safety
- society has publicly agreed to certain forms of deceit (e.g., unmarked patrol cars, surprise audits, random drug tests)
- when both parties acknowledge the situation calls for mutual deceit (e.g., poker game)
Truth should be the moral standard and liars must assume burden of proof to establish that deceit is justified from the target's point of view.
