# empathetic listening
Level 1 listening where the listener places themselves in the other's position, attempting to see things from their perspective while refraining from judgment. *[1]*
Reflecting and experiencing other people's feelings and thoughts by being present in a way that is mutually engaging. Helping the speaker see themselves with more clarity.
Listening to the silence as much as to the words and seeking to hear the underlying intention by viewing the situation from the speaker's point of view. Involves attempting to see the whole picture and respond in a way that supports the other person's intention, with a goal of preserving and continuing the relationship. ([note on p.138](zotero://open-pdf/library/items/WSCMPC8V?page=138)) *[2]*
