# four stages of competency
Stages along the [[learning curve]] first discovered by Noel Burch.
1. [[unconscious incompetent]]
2. [[conscious incompetent]]
3. [[conscious competent]]
4. [[unconscious competent]]
Instructional designers should pay particular attention to two places on this curve:
1. Transition from unconscious incompetent to conscious incompetent known as the [[magic window]].
2. Conscious competent stage where learners build skills and confidence. Individuals often perceive lack of mastery as sign that training is ineffective or that they are unable to learn.
- Important to design training where learners can easily identify their own progress.
