Triggered when we violate norms and social conventions, lose face, and fail to live up to moral guidelines. - shame and embarrassment - keep us from engaging in more damaging behavior and lead us to withdraw from social contact - guilt - motivates us to help others and treat them well ##### other-suffering emotions Elicited when we perceive suffering or sorrow in fellow human beings. Encourage us to comfort, help, and alleviate the pain of others. - sympathy - compassion ##### other-praising emotions Open us to new opportunities and relationships.
