Choose a word or phrase that captures the mindset you want to adopt in the New Year. > [!tip]- Tips for picking a word of the year > 1. Write down the things that made you happy this year. What felt good? What do you get excited about? What would it take to feel this way all the time? > 2. Next, think about what parts of your life could be better. What causes you stress? Are you thriving at work or feeling bored? Do you wake up excited about your day? What's happening in your relationships? > 3. Finally, check in with your body. How is your physical health? How is your mental well-being? How do you feel when you look in the mirror? > [!example]- Sampling of words to get you started > **Words of reflection:** awareness, awe, breathe, pause, reset, gratitude, resilience, optimism, focus > **Words of change:** reset, renew, nourish, energize, growth, recharge, evolve, bloom, adventure, travel > **Words of connection:** relate, reconnect, experience, balance, engage, cherish, comfort, listen ### 2024 - Self-mastery In Heroic, Brian Johnson says self-mastery is all about using our willpower wisely to install habits that run on autopilot. It's about practicing [[structural discipline]], [[reactive discipline]], and [[expansive discipline]]. ### 2023 - Engage This year I am looking to connect in a meaningful way in many areas of my life - with friends and family, with my career, with my health, and with myself. Engage is a more powerful and active description of how I need to show up when I'm connecting. > [!info]- Definition from Oxford Languages > en·gage > /inˈɡāj,enˈɡāj/ > _verb_ > 1. occupy, attract, or involve (someone's interest or attention). > "he plowed on, trying to outline his plans and engage Sutton's attention" > Similar: capture, catch, arrest, grab, seize, draw, attract, gain, win, captivate, hold, grip, engross, absorb, occupy > Opposite: lose > - cause someone to become involved in (a conversation or discussion). > "they attempted to engage Anthony in conversation" > > 2. participate or become involved in. > "organizations engage in a variety of activities" > Similar: participate in, take part in, join in, become involved in, go in for, occupy oneself with, throw oneself into, enter into, undertake > - establish a meaningful contact or connection with > "the teams needed to engage with local communities" ### 2020 - Intentional Action I selected this as my theme for the year because I'm trying to get better at both things. I want to practice being more intentional. Too often I just go along with things. Not often enough do I stop to think if what I'm going along with is the best choice, or the most leveraged choice. Am I paying attention and giving enough time to the things that really matter? That's my real goal in choosing Intentional to be part of my theme. This year I want to spend more time on things that really matter. The other part of my theme is a goal to take more action. It's all well and good to think about how to be more intentional and what I should focus on, but if I never do anything with those thoughts and ideas, then what's the point? --- ## Sources Parker-Pope, T.
